Notes from the Winemaker
Despite a warm February, the 2018 growing season was a cooler than average vintage. A cool spring pushed bloom to the end of May, first week of June. Fruit set was abundant but not excessive. Clusters had higher than average berry count but berry size was not compromised. Summer temperatures were moderate with fewer heat spikes than in recent years which lead to a vintage with longer hang time and less dehydration. Fruit quality was excellent with ripe phenolics and rich varietal flavors.
Initial impression of the 2018 Acclivity Merlot exhibits an essence of morello cherry, strawberry, plum, bramble, black tea, muscovado sugar, green olive and cardamom with a salvo of dried violets. On the palate, layers of fresh raspberries, dried cherries and blackberry are embraced by building tannins leading to a streak of iron laden minerality. The finish is bright, fresh and interwoven with a core of lifting acidity complimenting the velvet textured tannins.
